"A" stands for Apple and Analysis

We all had "A is for Apple" drummed into us in our youth.  But how did the teacher bridge the gap between me knowing the letters of the alphabet and me being able to read? It got me thinking - if I was a primary school teacher, how would I design an e-learning course for the purpose of enabling reading?  It must be possible - my imagination has just not stretched that far yet....

There are a few things I'm starting to realise with this ADDIE Model:

  1. It provides a roadmap for us novice e-learning instructional designers to find our way
  2. All the phases are intertwined and interconnected like an inner city maze
  3. An in-depth analysis should provide you with clear objectives so that you don't get lost
  4. There is a lot of tempting fruit in the form of bells and whistles to lead you astray
  5. Ultimately, we need to know where the learners are and where they need to be
  6. My E-learning intervention needs to be the bridge between their present knowledge and their desired knowledge.

I also don't think there's any room for vagueness when determining the aim of my e-learning project.
I need to be quite specific in the analysis of my objectives and the activities and experiences that will facilitate learning on an "e" platform.  I'm having trouble determining exactly what my aim is.  My grand plan is to sleep on it tonight and tackle this again tomorrow.

  1. The ADDIE model has another advantage which is it help us to organize our work, from planning to implementation. This post is very helpul indeed!

  2. Hi Crit CareNurse
I think you are right about ADDIE model. It guides us all the way in the project.
In relation with your statement about bridging the gap between present and desired knowledge, one important thing that you most consider during your intervention is to provide a self assessment at the beginning, to allow learners to check whether they have already the knowledge and skills, in this case you can let their to take the final test.
The self assessment also helps learners to organize and recognize the importance of the material.

  3. Hi Gise,
I like your comment on the self assessment. I just talked to some students today who were anxious about the load of work and I assured them that as we move towards new approaches of learning I look forward to the day that they practice self directed learning so well that they will be good assessors of themselves. I think over the next few days I shall reflect on this and most probably settle on this for my project. It is likely to see things clearer when Defining objectives for this.

    I appear to be swinging-
1st I started with a project ides to link all affiliated clinics for teaching, then moved onto a skills lab, and now self assessment tests which is a better defined area, hopefully, to design.
    Useful comment.

  4. I agree about the use of the ADDIE model in organising our thoughts about our e-learning project. It provides these definite steps for development of the project but as WCSYo points out - these steps are definitely intertwined.

I totally identify with your experience of being tempted by the bells-and-whistles options out there, and it was very difficult for me to focus on the aim of the project - facilitating learning, with so many potential options out there. I finally decided to keep things simple, and focus on one type of media (Ispring)for two reasons: 1 - with my limited IT skills, I needed to use a simpler tool so that I 2 - could focus on the learning.

Gise, thanks for your insight about the self-assessment questionaire before commencing the learning, this is something I have not considered and may still incorporate for recommend for my projext, because as you say, this relaly does help the learners recognise the importance of the material.
