Jumping on a speeding train

There is nothing worse than the feeling you get when you think you may have missed your mode of transport. This is how I felt when I started playing catch-up this afternoon. I can't believe I almost missed the ADDIE train en route to the beautiful towns of Clarity and Insight.

I have just managed to jump on the train, and whilst catching my breath and holding onto the handgrips (via Google Reader), this train accelerated at an astounding pace and passed through some pretty dark tunnels. I was just able to hold onto those handgrips with something resembling a death-grip and am glad to report that I have arrived safely at the town of I'm-Going-To-Be-Ok. I only arrived here in one piece because of all your blog postings (thank you).

There are many amazing aspects to this train trip (according to the MPhil e-Learning brochure), but as all students inevitably must learn - the trip can only be enjoyed if you have an idea of your final destination and if you don't try and jump on the train as the doors are closing and it is leaving the station.

I'm back on that train and am beginning to enjoy the journey once again. I started looking at some of the sites recommended in the e-learning PPP, and one that I am finding particularly interesting is Big Dog Little Dog
If you do nothing else, at least scroll down and check out his take on "ADDIE and the 5 Rules of Zen". Very refreshing.
Well, the train is safely in the station for now, and this commuter has decided to take a taxi to the town of Analysis. I plan to visit all the tourist destinations (and spots off the beaten track), and the grand plan is not to miss the trips up north to Design and Development!

  1. Excellent link to a very useful resource (http://is.gd/dyteI). From the history of ADDIE to its post 2000 uses and integrations the site is engaging and will definitely help us all come to better grips with instructional design systems.

The "Addie and the 5 rules of Zen" (right hand down on the page) is truly beautiful. I guess it sums up the kind of approach we have to this module as well. A kind of Adaptive expertise process. Not giving too much, and leaving room for exploration and self-learning.

I love your train metaphor! Great to know the train is now on course to weird and (mostly) wonderful places.

Keep us informed about the itenary...

  3. What an enlightening experience reading your post has been.....I'm assuming that it's a northen express (luxury)train cause if it's Metrorail, it's actually possible to find yourself on the train without having walked towards it or climbed aboard....the crowds waiting to get on just take you along with them! I must admit, that in the past three weeks I have felt that at times I was just swept onto the train only to realize that it was the wrong one and I had to get off again just to check the schedule!

I'll be checking your links for sure! I like how you've taken on this particular e-learning tool with full force, using so many of it's possible features in your blog.....show's some constructivism coming to the fore:)

Hope the taxi driver has the map loaded onto his GPS! See you at the next stop.

  4. What a creative soul to come with such a metaphor. I just loved the Zen correlation with ADDIE. I agree with Lianne and can taste the constructivist flavour in what you are doing. Your creative approach is refreshing and the way you apply it shows that we are not all about science and evidence.

  5. I must say that I totally missed the blog train when it came to designing and creating your profile on the blog. And you are riding the blue train with your blog. I like the train, but I love the nurse icon with her clip board and white stockings. I must try and improve on my bugsy blog.
